I was getting petrol today in a supermarket petrol station and as I was standing in the long queue I had a good look around the aisles on either side of me and my fellow captives.

Rows and rows of sweets and crisps lined the route to the till, which you would expect because they make so much money from them.

So we are fair game but as usual I was paying attention to who picked some of it up.

One guy picked up a sandwich and a drink so he was probably hungry and guess what he was a good weight.

Another lady picked up a chocolate bar and she was slim too.

Another lady went to pick something up but then changed her mind, so I guess she is on a diet and is prone to yo-yoing.

And one young lady walked out with two packets of crisps, a bag of sweets and two bars of chocolate. Guess whether she was overweight or not?

So is it the supermarkets fault that the UK is getting fatter? No, of course not, because those few minutes showed we all have a choice.

The supermarkets are good at tempting you, but you have to pick the stuff up, pay for it and eat it.

When you are in the Supermarket or the Petrol Station etc do you find yourself justifying why you should buy the chocolate, biscuits or snacks?

Whilst walking round my local supermarket a couple of weeks ago, I went wandering down the sweets aisle as I wanted to get a few treats in for the kids that would come ‘Trick or Treating’.

There were several people on that aisle studying the backs of packets of sweets and chocolates with a look of real concentration on their faces. Now it may be that they were reading all about the nutritional information to ensure they weren’t poisoning their loved ones, but I don’t think so.

You see in the past I have also wandered down these aisles and stood contemplating which chocolates or treats to buy. Not because of their nutritional value, but whether I could justify that it was for the kids, not me, (even though they have enough already) or that it was for a special occasion (but if I bought enough there would be lots left over) and if I bought ‘kiddie’ sweets no one would even think they were for me…..

Who was I kidding? I knew that the greater proportion of those snacks and treats were going to be eaten by me and that’s the reason why I bought them.

So, next time you find yourself pondering over what snacks to buy just ask yourself who are YOU trying to kid?
