Ever been sitting there fine and happy and then an advert comes on the television or the radio and all of a sudden you are hungry when you weren’t before?

You know you are not hungry but now your mouth is watering, your stomach is rumbling and maybe you get up and head for the kitchen or the shop.

The crazy thing is that we may not even like the product that was being advertised.

So what’s happening?

It’s a thing called stimulus and response

Here is a quick 3 minute audio to explain how it works and how it can affect you: Stimulus Response

It is used by the advertisers to make you think and feel what they want you to think and feel.

Our brains are brilliant at making connections to help us organise our lives and the advertisers know this and therefore spend a lot of money to influence you to buy their products.

DON’T GET CAUGHT!

They don’t care if you are hungry or not and whether you are on a diet or not, they just want your money.

So next time you start to feel hungry because of an advert remember how they want to control you and make sure you are in charge of your decisions.

What do you have for breakfast and why? Do you really need the quantity you have or is it just habit?

Yesterday I was making my breakfast and, as per my usual habit, I put 3 bars of Weetabix into the bowl. I was about to pour the milk when I stopped myself and asked, “Why do I have 3?”

Three answers popped up

1. I always have three
2. I’m a big guy so I need three
3. I will be hungry if I don’t have enough

I then put one back into the packet, had my breakfast and got on with my work. It was only when I was having lunch I knew I had not missed that extra one at all.

So much for my reasoning, I’m just glad I tested it.
